Lex grew up in a dark orphanage and always rebelled against her destined fate—to either be deemed useful to Society or forced to live among the mutants in Rock Bottom, the lowest level. When she is selected to join the elite cadets of the Population Control Forces, only her fellow cadet Kane truly understands her desire for freedom. Unbeknownst to her, another girl shares her rebellious spirit. Livia Cosmo, the Orphan Airess, resides on a sky island surrounded by wealth and privilege, yet she is just as constricted as Lex. Her every move is governed by rigid discipline as she is groomed to be a Proper Young Woman, prepared to be chosen for "cohabitation" by the finest young men. However, her encounter with a young man named Kane changes everything.
